The Basics

In ancient times, Jerash grew rich from iron ore as well as agricultural products, allowing for the construction of a unique oval forum, a hippodrome, an amphitheater, and a temple dedicated to Artemis, plus an arch built to mark a visit from Emperor Hadrian. The site is often visited either as a day trip from Amman (in conjunction with Umm Qais and Ajloun Castle) or as part of a larger tour of Jordan.

Amer, the best!
We booked transportation only since we wanted to go relax, nice and slowly. Amer, was kind, patient and always ready to give a hint or recommendation about the sites we visited. There was not even a single offer made by him to push for a place, restaurant or guide which was great, 5/5. Great driver, we felt safe the whole trip.

Private Day Trip to Jerash, Umm Qais and Ajloun Castle from Amman
I would highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to explore Jordan north of Amman. I requested to not visit Ajloun Castle for more time at Umm Qais. The tour company accommodated and gave me plenty of time at both Umm Qais and Jerash. I had plenty of time to explore both locations and did not feel rushed. We stopped outside Jerash and enjoyed some local food. I will be using this company when returning to Jordan.

Full-Day Tour: Umm Qais, Jerash, and Ajloun from Amman
This place is something. Jerash is way underrated. If you like ruins or ancient history, this is up your ally. Really cool place. When it says take 3 it....and bring a lot of water. The castle was neat, not an all day affair but neat. We didn't go to the last place because of time, but the driver did offer to bring us....that was on us not him. Our driver was awesome....really cool guy and doesn't smoke in front of you all day. I respect that a lot because it smells clean and he puts you first. Mo was his name for short. Just an awesome guy who deserves the work. He works hard. I had a moment where I wasn't paying attention and ran into a door....super embarising and not something I've ever done before. I'm usually really good about looking where I'm going. He didn't make fun of me and instead made sure I was okay. That's the kind of guy you want for your tour. He also really cares about his family and some of his stories will melt you. That is part of the overall experience you know? Good time on this journey.

Private Day Trip to Jerash, Umm Qais and Ajloun Castle from Amman
We has an excellent time with Mohammed who not only drove us between sites but also helped us get breakfast on the road and showed us the local cuisine over a fantastic lunch. The sites themselves are large and well preserved with Jerash as the real highlight. Make sure you allow enough time (at least couple of hours) to really explore Jerash especially if it's the last stop.

Half Day Tour of Jerash and Ajloun
Our driver Mousa was a character, and the guide, Abdullah, was very knowledgable about both sites. Jerash is a big site, and we felt we got to see all of it without hurrying. He showed us all sorts of little details that the other tourists rushed right past. They also took us to a roadside falafel stand that was the best I've ever had! The tour company called the hotel to confirm the tour the day before, they were very professional.

Private Tour: Jerash and Umm Qais Day Trip from Amman
Both of these sites were very interesting and very different. There is a lot of walking on the Jerash tour so one needs to be able-bodied. The site itself is vast.

Private drivers are the way to go. You get to see each location at your own pace, and in between locations get to engage in conversation with the english-speaking driver.

How to Get There

Jerash is located north of Amman, about an hour's drive from the city center via Route 35. Bus service in the area isn't the best, so travelers wanting to visit usually end up renting a car or taxi or going as part of an organized or private tour.

The Roman Army and Chariot Experience

One of the highlights of a visit to Jerash is the chance to see the Roman Army and Chariot Experience, a Roman reenactment performance divided into three parts. The first features 24 actors demonstrating battle formations. This is followed by gladiator fights, and the show ends with a series of 2-horse chariot races.
