The Basics

Day trips to Mont Saint-Michel from Paris are popular ways to explore this medieval island in a limited time and without the hassle of arranging your own transportation. Plus, many tours include access to the Benedictine Abbey (Abbaye du Mont Saint-Michel) as standard. Mont Saint-Michel is also easy to reach from Caen and Bayeux, both of which offer access to wider Normandy and places such as the D-Day landing beaches of World War II and the coastal village of Honfleur.

Mont Saint Michel Full Day Experience from Paris by Private Coach
Great trip! Felt like we were in good hands the entire trip. We brought a lunch with us and ate it in the abbey garden. Got a couple of drinks at one of the local bars after our tour. We were given a couple of hours of free time to explore everything. They gave us a good tip to buy the biscuits at the petrol station as they were half the price. Our guide was enthusiastic and informative about Mont Saint Michel. Would highly recommend if you have an extra day in Paris.

Full Day Tour focus on Mont St Michel from Bayeux with a National guide
Cate picked me up at my hotel in Bayeux and drove us to to Mont Saint-Michel in her car. The day was magical - sunny and warm and she made the trip with her knowledge of the place and her sparkling personality.

Mont Saint Michel Full Day Experience from Paris by Private Coach
This is an experience not to be missed while in France! It’s definitely worth a day trip out from Paris to see one of the most historic and beautiful structures that still exist. Our guide, Tinu, was very knowledgeable and helpful. Being sure to stay on schedule so as to not arrive at the monument and back in Paris later than necessary is definitely something to keep in mind while on this tour. Other than that, just have fun and take lots of photos!

Private Tour to Mont St-Michel and Honfleur from Paris
Anas took great care of us! He got us to where we needed to be safely and allowed us to take our time exploring both Mont St. Michel and Honfleur while he patiently waited. He pointed out things and found us a great place to eat. This was a great tour that I highly recommend.

Normandy - Mont Saint-Michel Full Day Tour from Bayeux
We enjoyed our tour with Francois. He was very friendly and helpful, knowledgeable and experienced! He customized the tour towards American participation in the Battle of Normandy but also shared the French perspective (he grew up in Normandy and described his family's connections to the war). We would not hesitate to recommend this tour with Francois and Gold Beach Tour Company!

Mont Saint-Michel Day Trip from Bayeux
Matt did a professional and friendly job in helping us understand the historical aspects of the buildings. He was prompt and helpful and attentive to the needs of the lovely people in our small group. He also made numerous small suggestions to make the most of the day and the other places we were thinking of visiting. He also brought the sun out: the weather was perfect for our visit.

Normandy - Mont Saint-Michel Full Day Tour from Bayeux
We had a great time with Steve. He was knowledgeable about the history of Mont St Michel and had answers for any questions we had. It was an extra plus that we were the only two passengers so I feel we had a private excursion. I would recommend his company for any excursions in the Normandy area.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The parking lot is located on the mainland; a shuttle runs from the lot to a drop-off point close to the entrance to Mont Saint-Michel.

  • The village is full of narrow walkways and steps, so wear comfortable shoes and prepare for crowds.

  • There are no stairs from the parking lot to the entrance, but 350 steps lead from the top of the main street to the abbey.

  • Wi-Fi is available at the tourist office in the village.

When to Get There

Mont Saint-Michel’s tourist office is open every day except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, while the abbey is closed January 1, May 1, and December 25. As a small island, it’s a popular destination with limited space, so arrive early to avoid the crowds, which are biggest in summer.

Exploring the Mont Saint-Michel Abbey

After paying your entrance fee to the abbey, grab a visitor’s guide for a self-guided tour of the Gothic landmark’s cloister and rooms. Alternatively, guided 75-minute tours in French and English are available year-round; they are included in admission with no reservation required. To hear commentary without a live guide, purchase a 1-hour audio guide for a small fee.
