The Basics

Stirling Castle ranks high on the agenda for visitors to Scotland. Many visitors explore the castle on day trips from Edinburgh and Glasgow, which typically also visit other Scottish Highlands highlights such as Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Loch Ness, Glen Coe, and whisky tasting experiences. Travelers should book castle tickets in advance to avoid long lines and sold-out dates.

Excellent small group tour
Excellent small group tour. Our driver and guide, Duncan was knowledgeable, skilled and friendly. We had plenty of time at all the stops and his insight was invaluable. Loch Lomond was beautiful, The Kelpies were stunning and Stirling Castle was great. Duncan's stories, music choices and interaction with the group were outstanding. When we return to Edinburgh, we will certainly book more of these outings with Rabbie's.

Loch Lomond National Park, Stirling Castle and the Kelpies Tour
Just loved this trip to see around Stirling Castle, an amazing sail on Loch Lomond & also to see the Kelpies up close! The weather was great for it too. Could have had more music on the bus, but the driver told us a few interesting stories of the areas we passed through.

Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond and Whisky Trail Small Group Day Tour from Glasgow
Stevie was so wonderful as our driver and guide on our day trip to Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond, and the Glengoyne Distillery! He was fun and took care to make sure to recommend some wonderful places for lunch and even had us singing along to some great Scottish songs! The tour was excellent overall and the group was small enough that it felt like we were having a private tour.

Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond and Whisky Trail Small Group Day Tour from Glasgow
Stirling Castle was fabulous! A lot of beautiful places in our way to Loch Lomond, the bigest loch of Scotland. At the Glengoyne Distillery we tasted 10 & 18 years old whiskey and we learned production process. Thank you Bobby, our super guide in this wonderful trip!

Stirling Castle, Trossachs, Loch Lomond and Whisky Tour
With only a few days in Scotland this trip was a truly memorable experience; a history lesson brought to life, with a marvelous guide. Clarion is a gem. Not only does she have deep knowledge of Scottish history, her whisky knowledge is deep as well. A wonderful day!!

Loch Lomond, Kelpies & Stirling Castle Small-Group Day Tour from Edinburgh
The tour was really fun, I enjoyed every place I visited. The landscapes are so beautiful. Our guide Ally was great, he explained a lot of interesting things about Scotland and it made us feel a little bit of the real Scottish experience. Besides being fun, he is also a very professional and experienced guide, which made the tour even more enjoyable. I look forward to going on another tour with Rabbie's soon.

Another win for Rabbies! Scotland provided us with wonderful sights and Will kept us entertained and even went out of his way to find us some Highland cows ( or cooooos in Scottish!!!) Really enjoyed the samples of Scottish singers on the way home. Thoroughly enjoyable day and would highly recommend.

How to Get There

The easiest way to get to the castle is via guided tours from Edinburgh, Glasgow, or Greenock. During busy summer months, the parking lot at Stirling Castle often fills to capacity; travelers can also use the Castleview park-and-ride service (located on the western outskirts of town off junction 10 on the M9). Alternatively, ride the train from Edinburgh or Glasgow (both take under an hour). The 20-minute walk from the train station, though not long, is somewhat steep.

When to Get There

July and August attract the biggest crowds. Be prepared for varying weather, even in summer; rain and chilly temperatures are common, and parts of the castle complex, such as the Queen Anne Gardens, leave visitors open to the elements.

Stirling’s Links to Scottish Heroes

For “Braveheart” fans, Stirling Castle will be forever linked with one name: William Wallace. From the castle, you can see the National Wallace Monument on Abbey Craig hill, where in 1297, Wallace and his troops prepared to fight off the invading English army. Robert the Bruce, known for his decisive victory over the English at nearby Bannockburn in 1314, is also commemorated at Stirling Castle. Look for a statue of the sword-carrying King of Scots on the castle’s esplanade.
