The Basics

The Hong Islands are rife with secluded beaches, coral reefs, and sea caves to explore. There’s something for every type of outdoor enthusiast—Railay is popular with rock climbers, Koh Hong's Hong Lagoon is a calm place to kayak, and Phang Nga Bay has scenic views and great sunbathing.

Longtail boat or speedboat tours are a good way to visit the islands and typically depart from Krabi or Phuket. Some excursions include snorkeling or kayaking, and often feature stops at Khao Phing Kan, Ao Nang Beach, Phi Phi Island, and Lading Island.

Amazing, you’ve got to do this!
Amazing experience, 100% recommend that you do this activity. The many many 5 star reviews really should be enough to persuade anyone. The guide was so great, so informative and so easy to understand (even though she said she’s not used English in almost 2 years because of the pandemic and no tourists). My partner and I just loved everything about the trip, including the stop off at the lagoon. Hopefully when I come back again and do this trip with my family, we’ll be able to stop off at the same lagoon.

Hong Islands Day Tour and 360 Viewpoint by Longtail Boat From Krabi
This is a great experience if you’re staying in Ao Nang or Railay. The organization was flawless, the staff was really nice, kind and professional and the tour leader had a really good level of English which makes it a better experience. The only downside was a very small delay due to the boat engine, but the crew was again very professional in fixing the problem and get us back on track (that’s the reason why I don’t give it a 5 star rating). Totally recommend this tour!

Longtail Boat Private Charter Tour to Hong Islands From Krabi
Very responsive when making the booking and with responding to questions. We had a nice trip and booking the private trip allowed us more flexibility to return to the hotel when we wanted, which is always good when traveling with kids.

Longtail Boat Private Charter Tour to Hong Islands From Krabi
Amazing trip with premium service from start to finish. The whole trip was fantastic - beautiful, stunning locations at a good pace - the Hong Islands are well worth a visit and you can get some incredible photos if you climb the steps to the viewpoints. Chartering your own boat allows you to move around as you please throughout the day and also go to locations at their quietest with no set agenda. My boat captain, was kind, professional and offered a great service and experience. Would highly recommend this!

Hong Islands Full-day Tour from Krabi including Lunch
This tour was really good! You pay the National Park fee of 300 baht pp to the tour operator when you arrive at their shop in the town. We did originally book a longboat tour as wanted that experience but after booking was told it was not available but will be a speedboat at the same price. Smooth booking process door to door travel from our hotel all the staff were friendly and made sure we were all looked after and helping to get on and off the boat which can be a bit tricky as the boat is moving with the waves. Offered plenty of cold drinks and some snacks during the journeys as well as a lunch of chicken and rice once we arrived on Hong island. There is somewhere to also buy some bbq food and drinks there. Each island had a restroom. Speed boat was a little choppy but expected due to the waves. As the longboats take longer getting to each place I assume you don’t get as long at each stop so am glad we had a speedboat for that purpose. Clear time for return given at each stop. The islands are so beautiful and it was amazing to be there, the first 2 islands we didn’t spend a long time on as they were small and more boats were arriving, we set off early morning so were not turning up at each place at the same time as lots of others. I’m glad it isn’t peak season as can imagine everywhere being packed. Each island had a section for boats to moor and a place for swimming. Hong Island we spent a couple of hours on which was just breathtaking taking in the scenery. We did some snorkelling but once more people move about the sand it becomes hard to see. Not a big range of fish to see and only a small area where they swim. The sand is so soft and white and the sea is warm. There is another part to the island and a high view point we didn’t explore but felt what we did do was enough to enjoy. It will be an experience I will always remember.

Private Tour to Hong Islands & 4 Islands with Sunset & Night Snorkel
We went on a cold, rainy day and were still having a great time - beautiful views at each island and our guide was super friendly and we never felt rushed. We got to do some snorkeling at Koh Lao La Ding because we were at low tide and saw beautiful coral and lots of fish! Unfortunately my husband hurt his foot (his own fault) so we had to cut our trip short and missed the night snorkel, but our guide and the tour operator took us to the hospital and handled everything for us - communicating with hospital staff and the trip insurance covered everything. Above and beyond service!! They took what would have been a terrifying experience and removed all the stress for us. Highly recommend this team!

Amazing experience visiting three islands. The lunch was better than expected, really tasty. No regrets taking this tour over the Hong Islands tour!

One-Day Tour at Hong Islands by Speedboat from Krabi
This trip is less because of the lack of tourism season. We travel to Hong Island by speed boat. The guides helped us a lot and he can speak 6 languages. The island is very beautiful, white sand beach and a lot of fish. What you should do when snorkeling is do not allow food to fish. There will be staff to call you if you do. Our family is very fun.

An Amazing Day Out!

Island Hopping from Hong to James Bond Islands from Krabi with Speedboat
This was an amazing day out from start to finish. The speedboat was an exciting way to travel between islands, and our guide was very friendly and informative which enhanced the experience. The day included a snorkelling stop (everyone had to wear life jackets) and visits to a variety of islands where we walked along pathways to be shown fascinating flora and fauna plus some relaxing time to enjoy the beaches and seas. The tour is advertised as ‘avoiding the crowds’ and it did exactly that; the seven of us on the trip had these beautiful places to ourselves. Lunch on the beach was very impressive – hot food for everyone including a tasty vegetarian option which we had pre-requested. Soft drinks, fruit and water were also freely available throughout the day. I can wholeheartedly recommend this trip which is definitely well worth the cost.

Small-Group Sea Kayaking at Hong Island from Krabi
Excellent day. It was @ a 30 minute drive from our hotel to the pier, and another 30 minutes on a long boat to reach the island. We were a small group of 4 and our guide A checked we were comfortable with kayaking before we set off round the island. We stopped off in a lagoon and the scenery was spectacular. We were given the choice of returning the way we came or carrying on round the island. We decided to carry on round and had some amazing features pointed out to us on the way. Back at the beach, we went for a tasty lunch of local dishes, and then had around an hour to snorkel. We then went by long boat to another beach for more snorkelling before returning to the pier and return to our hotels. A great day out. (It was very sad to see the amount of plastic in the sea, but we all picked up what we could to be disposed off properly at the end of the kayak).

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Some of the islands are located within Ao Phang Nga National Park, so fees may apply. Be sure to have cash on hand as most tours don’t include the national park fee.

  • The sea can be choppy, so those prone to seasickness should prepare ahead of time—especially if you’re traveling by longtail boat.

  • Because of the bumpy waters, most boat operators won’t serve pregnant women or children under 1 year old.

The tropical coast of southern Thailand is warm year-round, but April through May and September through October are the hottest and rainiest periods. November through March is a great time to visit, as breezes keep the temperature warm but comfortable.

James Bond Island

Khao Phing Kan and Ko Ta Pu, two towering limestone karst islands, are collectively known as James Bond Island thanks to their appearance in the 1974 filmThe Man with the Golden Gun. These islands served as the setting for an enemy hideout and later became part of the National Park. While you can still visit Khao Phing Kan, it’s now forbidden for boats to approach Ko Ta Pu due to threat of erosion.
