Malabar Hill Tours

Mumbai's fanciest neighborhood, Malabar Hill has some of the most expensive real estate on earth. It's a fun place to wander around and take in views of the city around you, and while the area's architecture and various attractions are the main reasons to visit, you also might spot a local celebrity or two.
The Basics
Along with ogling its mix of expensive residences, the main things to see and do in Malabar Hill include the Banganga Tank, the Walkeshwar Temple, and the Hanging Gardens. It’s easy enough to visit on your own, but if you want to learn more about the area and its famous residents, visit with an in-the-know local friend or as part of an organized tour.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Pack your sunscreen and wear a hat, especially if you’ll be strolling around in the midday heat.
- The area is best explored on foot, so wear comfortable shoes.
- Give yourself plenty of time to explore Malabar Hill’s various tourist attractions, and don’t miss the Hanging Gardens.
How to Get There
Malabar Hill is located at the northern end of Back Bay in South Mumbai, north and west of Chowpatty Beach. It can be reached via both Walkeshwar Road and Napean Sea Road. The nearest train station is Grant Road, about a 15-minute walk or five-minute drive from the edge of the neighborhood.
When to Get There
The best time to visit Malabar Hill is during the drier, cooler months from October through March, especially if you want to explore area attractions that could otherwise get muddy, such as the Hanging Gardens. The best views occur around sunset, when the sun dips into the Arabian Sea.
Malabar Hill's Famous Residents
Some of Mumbai's richest residents live in this area, and the real estate prices in the neighborhood are some of the highest anywhere in the world. Well-known residents include steel baron Sajjan Jindal, along with a smattering of famous athletes and stars. The Antilia Building, considered the world's most expansive home after Buckingham Palace, is situated nearby.
