The Basics

Taroko National Park is one of Taiwan’s most spectacular natural attractions; it also ranks among the most popular. Most travelers make their way here on a day trip from Taipei or nearby Hualien City on Taiwan’s east coast. Multi-day tours of the island often include the gorge, as well as sights like Sun Moon Lake, Kaohsiung, Taitung, and the East Coast National Scenic Area.

Great trip to Taroko
We had a great time at the Taroko Gorge. It was incredibly beautiful and the tour was really well organised and without any difficulties at all. We really didn't have to worry about a thing all day, it was great value. Josephine was a wonderful guide for the day, we had a fantastic time.

Private Full Day Taroko Gorge Tour
Our tour with Vincent was amazing. We can't believe how much he could fit in to a single say trip of toroko national park. We never felt rushed and we felt that Vincent was the best possible guide we could have asked for. The value for money is outstanding and you will leave this tour feeling very happy and satisfied with the quality and quantity. Thank-you so much Vincent, we were lucky to have you.

Taroko Gorge Day Tour from Taipei by Train
The trip itself was amazing Scenery is incredible Unfortunately the tour guide was lacking. There was not much information given about the history, development or engineering etc of the gorge. She didn’t really serve a purpose except to tell us what time to get back on the bus. I travel the world and wish to learn about culture and history, and nothing was offered even when I asked.

The Highlight of Our Trip to Taiwan

Full-Day Private Taroko National Park Tour from Hualien City
Taroko National Park is one of the most strikingly beautiful parks we have visited in recent years. Our guide, Joshua, made the day even more enjoyable by giving us an insightful tour peppered with many facts about the landscape and the nature of the park. He also made the day more joyful with his catalog of jokes and one-liners. Highly recommend this tour, especially if you can get Joshua to guide you.

5 Star-6 Days Taiwan Bus Tour (Sun moon lake, Alishan, Kenting, Taitung, Taroko)
This tour had widened my eyes to the great natural beauty that Taiwan is blessedly endowed. In the six days, we were taken to see mountains, gorges, caves, cliffs, rivers, forests, hot springs and even beaches filled with pebbles. Through conversations with the friendly guide and driver I learned much about the culture and aspirations of Taiwanese people. I hope to return someday to revisit some the locations!

Full-Day Private Taroko National Park Tour from Hualien City
My husband and I enjoyed our Taroko Gorge tour with Jeff (Chao)! We learned a lot about the history behind all the sites we visited and were able to see all the spots listed on the itinerary. Definitely would recommend to those who have limited time and looking to explore Taroko Gorge within a day. By using this tour service instead of the buses we were able to have a more personalized experience and see more of the park.

Unforgettable Trip w/Great Guide!

Private Full Day Taroko Gorge Tour
Ivan made our trip totally memorable and fun! We totally customized everything and had a blast. First, he took us to get yummy steamed buns at one of Hualien’s most famous stands (the line at 8am was already about 30 minutes), but the savory/sweet balance and fluffy, meat filled buns were worth the wait! Next, we detoured to the container-box Starbucks to check it out. While we were there, there’s a Happy Farm nearby with horses, deer, and peacocks, oh my! Our kids enjoyed seeing the animals up close. The main attraction, of course, was Taroko National Park. It was beautifully green & ephemeral with the foggy most rising above the mountain sides. Ivan shared interesting facts and history about each place and knew where the most scenic spots were to take us. After lunch in the center of Taroko, where we also met red-faced monkeys just roaming free, we spontaneously decided to go paragliding along the coast. Ivan took us to a place near the entrance of the national park and before you knew it, we were paragliding with a bird’s eye view of Taroko, Hualien City, and the Pacific Ocean! It was a truly unforgettable and fun, easy-going day with a great tour guide! Having Ivan take us around made all the difference! We highly recommend taking this tour!

We viewed canyons, waterfalls and marble, with short walks to see more than from out the windows of the bus. The suspension bridge at the end was a highlight

Taroko Gorge Day Tour from Taipei by Train
A wonderful experience, well worth the 3 hours of train travel to the start of the tour. We felt that we saw as much of Taroko Gorge as would be possible in a day. Apart from being quite a character, Josephine the tour guide was very well organised and made sure we had enough time at each stop to experience the beautiful gorge. The tour also featured a superb lunch at a five star hotel. Some minor quibbles. As the tour company is selective about which hotels it would collect guests from (apparently refusing to go to some quite close to the centre), it might be good if they offered the option of joining the tour at Taipei Main Station rather require us to travel to another hotel, which would have allowed us another half hour's sleep in the morning. Also, the last two stops on the tour - a marble factory and the local beach - were not that exciting and perhaps there are better options. But, overall, the tour was excellent, hence my high rating.

How to Get There

Given that the national park is tricky to reach on public transport, guided group or private tours are the best and most convenient way to visit. From nearby Hualien, buses depart daily for various points inside the gorge. From Sincheng, the park's closest train station, visitors can take a taxi to the park.

When to Get There

Due to the gorge’s popularity among tourists, it’s a good idea to arrive early in the morning to enjoy the park before the big tour groups begin to arrive. Expect temperatures upwards of 80°F (26°C), high humidity, and rainfall during summer (June to September).

Hiking the Zhuilu Old Trail

Among the park’s numerous hiking trails, the Zhuilu Old Trail is the most famous. Carved into the cliffside some 2,000 feet (600 meters) above the Swallow Grotto, the narrow hunting path is one for the adventurous—it lacks a guardrail and is a mere three feet (one meter) wide in places. If you're feeling daring and want to tackle this route, book ahead, as a limited number of permits are issued a day.
