Green Lotus Peak (Bilian Feng)
Green Lotus Peak (Bilian Feng), the most famous peak in Yangshuo, is so named because it resembles a green lotus bud rising out of the Li River. With an elevation of 977 feet (298 meters), Green Lotus Peak offers stunning panoramic views over Yangshuo and the Li River, and has attracted visitors for more than a thousand years.
The Basics
Climb for panoramic views of the countryside but also to check out the working Jiangshan Temple (or the Memorial Hall of Jianzhen, a Buddhist monk from the Tang dynasty) and Yingjiang Pavilion, with its eight framed windows. From the foot of the peak, there is a sightseeing path along which are many ancient inscriptions in the stone, the most famous of which is the 16-foot (five meter) long Chinese character “Dai” carved during the Qing dynasty.
Things to Know Before You Go
  • There is an entrance fee to access Green Lotus Peak.
  • Wear sturdy shoes as the path to the top of the peak can be steep and slippery, especially after it has rained.
  • Bring water if you are visiting during the summer and plan to climb to the top of the peak.
How to Get There
Green Lotus Peak is located at No. 2 Binjiang Road, near the junction of West Street and the Li River. You can take bus nos. 601, 603, 604, 801, or 802 to West Street, and then walk northeast until the end of West Street. Those taking the Li River cruise will end up at Shuidongmen Dock, which is near Green Lotus Peak.
When to Get There
Green Lotus Peak is open daily from 8am to 6pm. Those planning to hike to the top of the peak should come early in the morning, before the heat. The most stunning views come around sunset.
Legend of the Green Lotus Fairy
Legend has it that the Green Lotus fairy lived in heaven but felt trapped. She was able to convince Chang’e, the moon goddess, to smuggle her out of heaven and to the Li River, where she fell in love with the carp in the river. To stay with her beloved, she was turned into stone, forming Green Lotus Peak.
