The Basics

Explore independently or join a free tour that covers the 800-year history of the cathedral and its stained glass art. General admission tickets include entry to the cathedral, the Undercroft Museum, and a tour. Alternatively, opt for a Minster and Tower combo pass, which allows you to climb the central tower for unrivalled city views; tower trips depart every 45 minutes throughout the day and can only be booked on the day.

Behind-the-scenes tours that offer access to off-limits areas such as the Chapter House and Mason’s Loft are also available for an additional fee. For a wider introduction to York’s history, visit the cathedral as part of a ghost or sightseeing tour—itineraries typically cover other major York and Yorkshire sights such as Clifford’s Tower, the Shambles, and Rievaulx Abbey. Plus, some York passes include free entry to the cathedral.

Great experience
All 6 of us were blown away by Alice’s enthusiasm and professionalism. Not to mention her memory! She didn’t fail to recall a single name in a group total of 40. We would definitely recommend this to friends!

Ghost Bus Tour of York
This trip is a lot of daft fun. The bus is lovely and the guide was great. It could actually have done with more padded out ghost stories, but we did have a great time. Cheers

York Hop-on Hop-off Open Top Bus Tour with Audio Guide
We visited York having never been before. We took the tour , getting in the tour bus, literally as we arrived! The tour guide made it interesting and very funny. We decided to do one full tour to get an idea of where things were. With the hop on hop off we were able to visit the places as we wanted to getting back on the bus Well worth the money for us

Ghost Bus Tour of York
We all had a brilliant time on the ghost tour. The ‘conductor’, Rick O’mortis😃 was brilliant from the moment the bus arrived. Lots of fun spooky facts and guest participation. If you’re visiting York this is definitely a fabulous way to spend an hour or so, highly recommend

York Walking Tour including York Minster
Amazing tour with Emily. The tour was very interesting and informative. Emily was a wonderful guide, extremely friendly, kind and knowledgeable. I learned a lot about York. I was lucky enough to be the only person on the tour, so it was very personalised. I would highly recommend this tour!

Ghost Bus Tour of York
A fun outing with the slightly unhinged conductor who kept us all amused. Good special effects too. We never did find out where Margaret’s body was.

Ghost Bus Tour of York
We enjoyed that we got a bit of walking tour and bus tour. Never done a Ghost Bus Tour before. Quite liked the quirkiness of it, something different & different stories and time of day.

York Walking Tour including York Minster
Our tour guide, Caroline, was very knowledgeable regarding the history of York and the best places to visit on this short walking tour. She also gave us great recommendations for places to visit on our own after the tour and good places to eat.

Attend a Service at York Minster

If you want to spend time in prayer or contemplation, and experience the cathedral as a worshiper, you can attend a service here. Services are held daily, and evensong—normally performed by the York Minster Choir and occasionally by visiting choirs— is especially atmospheric. Service times are listed in advance on the cathedral website.
