St. Peter’s Episcopal Church is a still-functioning historic church in the Society Hill area of downtown Philadelphia. First built around 1760, the building itself is on the National Register of Historic Places, and its unique design has the altar on the one end and an elevated pulpit on the other, so there’s is no front or back to the church. The church was built as an expansion to the nearby Christ Church, and many founding fathers worshipped in both locations, including George and Martha Washington.

Private Architectural Walking Tour of Colonial Philadelphia

Private Architectural Walking Tour of Colonial Philadelphia

Philadelphia is rich in history and iconic buildings and architectural landmarks. Your private guide will lead you to some of the most elaborately furnished buildings, including Powell House, built in 1765 and known as the finest example of a Georgian house in the city. It welcomed some big names in its heyday day including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams who, during their stay, would attend church on Sundays at St Peter's, a historic Episcopal church. On the Colonial Era Streets and Historic Architecture Tour, you'll visit Independence Hall, a building of perfect proportions, symmetry and balance that budding architects dream of. As you wander around, your guide will share stories of the historic buildings and how they have been preserved over the years.
