Balanced and Informative

Cristina was incredibly accommodating and very friendly. She brought us through the early stages of communism in Romania, right through to the modern day - stopping at various points at the city that denoted key instances. It's a great way to see Bucharest, particularly if you're interested in politics.

good, but a bit one-sided
Kristoffer_H
, Oct 2021
The tour was interesting but a bit one-sided. A lot of the typical "horrors of communism" without a single word about anything positive about the period. I realize that Ceausescu was one of the worst communist leaders in the communist bloc so it's hard to say anything good. Still, I'd like to know from a Marxist perspective why Ceausescu lived like a king, abused his people and betrayed the cause of Marxism-Leninism.

Hello, Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear you found the tour to be a bit one-sided, but we admit that there are very few positive things that can be mentioned about the Communist period in Romania, considering this country had one of the most brutal totalitarian regimes in the Eastern Bloc. Normally, we do have one stop near Caru' cu Bere restaurant, where we explain why dictator Ceausescu was perceived so favorably internally and by Western democracies in the 1960s and 1970s. Besides this, a few other positive effects of Communism in Romania are, arguably: 1. the elimination of illiteracy (virtually all citizens received at least some very basic form of education for free) 2. building of infrastructure projects (highways, metro, Danube-Black See Canal), unfortunately with huge human costs (political prisoners and other forms of forced labor were often employed) 3. improvement of living conditions for the working class (unfortunately, at the expense of architectural heritage and private property in Romania) So even the positive aspects of Communism are shadowed by their side-effects. We encourage other visitors who take this tour to explicitly ask about any positive aspects of Communism in Romania; our guides can explain some of these aspects in great detail. All the best, Marius

Exceptional experience and value!

This was an amazing experience! The guide was so knowledgeable but also very clear with her speaking. We saw so many different areas, buildings, neighborhoods, etc. and they were all very interesting to learn about. Also, the guide had a whole binder of photos that showed the areas in the past and pictures of the people who had something to do with the area, building, neighborhood, etc. The entire tour was way better than I could have ever expected and the value for the experience was exceptional!
