Departure Point

Central Canterbury

Departure Time

11:00 AM
Travel independently to the jetty on the River Stour in central Canterbury, and board a traditional wooden punt, complete with its own chauffeur-guide. Settle into the cushioned seats — blankets and hot water bottles are also available — and relax as your guide uses the pole to pilot your punt through Canterbury center.

Along the way, sit back and admire the passing riverbanks, medieval buildings and gardens. Listen as your guide tells tales about the sights, and absorb the overwhelming peace of the river, broken only by the sounds of the lapping waters.

Cruise by the 12th-century Poor Priests Hospital, used as a tannery, almshouse, priests’ house and workhouse down the centuries. Sail under low bridges and through tunnels, and waft past pretty Greyfriars Chapel, medieval Eastbridge Hospital and the Blackfriars Dominican Priory.

Take photos from the water of the half-timbered Old Weavers House, named after the Flemish and Huguenot weavers who used it during the 16th century. Today, the house serves as a restaurant where you can enjoy ‘punt and meal’ deals.

After approximately 45 minutes, your journey ends when you disembark at the riverside.

Punting tours that take you out of town into the Kent countryside are also available.

Be sure to go to the Punting Company in advance to secure your time slot. We ended up arriving for 11am which we expected to be our time slot, however, were told we had to book it for a later time and had to come back (luckily only a 20 minute delay). Commentary was good, however, not always clear due to the visors the guide needed to wear (obviously required at the moment though). Lovely, relaxing way to see nature and a different perspective of Canterbury.

It was very good!! Canterbury is a special city to visit. Our guide Sébastian was superb!! Good the idea to grab a coffee just before the departure at their own Cafe! The only thing was that the tour was shorter than 45 mins.

It was very busy on the river which sometimes made it difficult for our tour guide/puntsman to give the tour without being disjointed.

It was a very relaxing boattrip through the nature of Canterbury. I would have preferred to see the old city, but obviously it wasn't possible. We will do this trip next time.
