Our local guide, Kevin of Beijing...
Mark S
, Aug 2017
Our local guide, Kevin of Beijing Variarts Tours and Activities, spent the day with our family of three to tour Qufu's famed and venerated UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Temple of Confucius, the Kong Family Mansion where the firstborn son of each generation of descendants lived, and the Cemetery of Confucius. Our day together started before 8:00 AM in order for us to take in the official opening of the temple at 8:00 AM with a procession of costumed dancers and musicians representing the Six Arts through the South Gate: a poetic and evocative start to our day immersed in the life and continued influence of Confucius. Our tour included a delicious lunch at a local restaurant and ended with a walk through the immense forested park of the Cemetery of Confucius. Kevin was both incredibly knowledgeable about the sites we visited and attentive to our many questions, including our queries about contemporary life in China. He was friendly and engaging, and delighted when our curiosity spurred deeper discussions about Chinese history and philosophy. Kevin even sat with us after our tour of Confucian sites was finished to help us map out our upcoming visit to the nearby sacred mountain of Taishan, as we had not reserved a guide for the excursion. In short, he was an exemplary guide, and it was our privilege to have him share his knowledge and experience with us while touring Qufu this month!
