Itinerary
Stop At:
Highclere Castle
Depart London and drive away from the city towards the South West of England, a journey that takes approximately 90 minutes from London. On arrival at Highclere Castle there will be time to enjoy the beautiful gardens; The Monk’s Garden, White Border, Secret Garden and Wood of Goodwill. There will be time for lunch, or a snack in the Tearooms where you can enjoy light lunches or afternoon teas made in the Castle kitchens, (please note that food and drink are not included) before entering Highclere Castle for an afternoon visit. You will have approximately 4 hours at the Castle. The Carnarvon family has lived at Highclere since 1679. Major rebuilding work was carried out in the 18th and 19th centuries, and in 1838, the 3rd Earl of Carnarvon brought in Sir Charles Barry to transform his home into a truly stunning mansion. During the First World War the Castle was transformed into a hospital, returning to a private home in 1922. To this day the current (8th) Earl and Countess of Carnarvon live partly in the Castle and partly nearby, but remain closely involved in the Castle's day to day life and future. On entry to Highclere Castle visitors follow a route through the Castle through with guides in each State room. The State rooms include the Saloon, Library, Dining room, Music room, Drawing room and Smoking room. Visitors can then go up the Red Stairs to view some of the Bedrooms and the Gallery, before walking down the Oak staircase back to the Saloon in the heart of the house. Many of the rooms from the series can be seen on the tour including the Parlour where the Crawleys take tea, the bedrooms and of course the Dining room (scene of many family arguments!). Return to London, the coach will drop off at Victoria coach and train station, which has excellent links for forward travel throughout London and beyond. You will arrive back in central London by appropriately 4.30pm, depending on traffic conditions.

Tour Ticket issuer couldn’t be bovvered

The bus was a little late but to be expected due to London traffic. Once it arrived, it was very clean and comfortable on both the drive there and back. Once we arrived, I think Ashely stated she would meet us under a tree to give us tickets. There was a group of about 15 that could not find anyone. They had left before we made it to that tree. The ticket issuer (a girl under 20 years old) ran halfway across the property to get our tickets. Question, if you get 65 tickets and you have 18 tickets left to give...did you leave them behind before moving on? Who does that?

Driver was 30 minutes late

Driver was late so we had less time at the castle. There was no one waiting at the pick up with a sign like it was stated in the ad. The driver did not give any instructions or information about the tour or drop off location.

Loved seeing the fully furnished rooms and the docents were a wealth of info. The chicken with mushroom gravy in the tearoom was hot & delicious. The Egyptian exhibit in the cellar relates to the Lord of the castle that discovered tutankamens tomb. Catch the talk at the seaman’s statue. Would have been nice if the bus driver would have put a DVD about the castle.

Well done

Expected a big bus. Got a small congenial group and an excellent driver/guide. the castle was well run and not too crowded to be able to move and see things. I was glad they did not sell so many tickets that a line was created on the hottest day of the year. We got right in. I did not need nearly as much time as the others in my group but I never walk slowly lest my back begin to ache. If I were to go again i would get myself there ad go when I am done. I did not tour the grounds because it was well over 90 degrees F that day and I would not have enjoyed it.
