Your rendez‐vous with the ghosts of New Orleans begins bright and early in the French Quarter. Hop aboard an air‐conditioned coach for a quick ride to St Louis Cemetery No 1, the oldest and most famous cemetery in New Orleans. Spanning just one square block, this cemetery houses thousands of the city’s famous and infamous dead in tombs and mausoleums of varying extravagance. Your guide will explain the reason for above‐ground burial and introduce you to several enormous society tombs, such as the Italian Mutual Benevolent Society tomb featured in the classic film Easy Rider.

You will learn about some of the site’s famous residents such as Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Queen Of New Orleans. Hear about her influence and popularity during her lifetime as a priestess and esteemed local citizen. See Madame Laveau’s tomb, a spiritual destination for people from across the world, where you may follow the mythical tradition of making a wish or casting a spell.

As you experience the haunting magnificence of the cemetery, you’ll learn about the history and development of voodoo religion in New Orleans. Largely misunderstood as a dark art with a cult following, voodoo is an ancient African religion that has been widely influenced by other faiths including Catholicism. Voodoo still enjoys a formidable presence in New Orleans, evidenced by the presence of voodoo specialty shops, selling ritual materials such as herbs, oils, candles, voodoo dolls and gris‐gris – voodoo amulets. You’ll even receive your own complimentary gris‐gris bag to take home.

Your tour returns to the starting point in the French Quarter.

St. Louis Cemetery No. 1
Note: cemetery access not guaranteed. Haunting adventures await you during this cemetery and voodoo walking tour through New Orleans. St Louis Cemetery No. 1 is the oldest and most famous of the three St Louis cemeteries. You may recall it as the site from the classic movie Easy Rider or perhaps by its most notorious 'resident' Marie Laveau, the late Voodoo Queen of New Orleans. Your guide will recount the background of both the famous and infamous people who are buried there. You'll also learn about New Orleans’ unique above-ground burial custom and hear various society tombs--grand mausoleums built to entomb and commemorate members of professional, benevolent, and ethnic organizations. Throughout your tour, you’ll get a view of the evolution of voodoo -- the practice of witchcraft with an African religious heritage. Often dismissed as a cult or superstition, plenty of New Orleans residents believe in its powers. Voodoo rites and traditions are still observed to this day.

It was boring. The guide talked a lot and we had to cut it short because he didn’t have no emotion in speaking.
