Essential for learning about Cambodian history
Natalie_R
, Aug 2022
We have recommended this tour to others passing through the city. It was very eye-opening to learn the tragic history. Our guide was amazing- his knowledge of the sites and Cambodian culture and society in general really made the history come alive, as well as illuminate current affairs. Highly recommend this over just doing the audio tour.

A must. Terribly moving, learning the history of the country of the past fifty years in the places where the atrocities happened, leaves a mark on you. I've done several tours, but our guide here, Chesda, was the best of all. Excellent English, knowledgeable, sensitive, caring.

I recommend this tour. It was very informative but also gave time for those on the tour to experience each site personally. Chesda was my tour guide and was very knowledgeable about the locations and events as well as sharing information about Cambodia and providing recommendations for tourists.

Our tour guide, Jesta, was extremely knowledgeable about Khmer history and provided a great backdrop into a horrible chapter of their country's past.

Tough yet insightful experience into Cambodia’s past

We were given a tour by a gentleman called Baboon. He was very knowledgeable, friendly and had good english to explain some of the dark times that Cambodia had previously gone through. While this tour is a sobering and eye opening experience, I would highly recommend it to learn about the history. The journey to and from the locations was comfortable and we were offered cold water throughout as it wad a hot day. Ask for Baboon to give you the tour!

Important and necessary tour with an excellent tour guide

Baboon was an excellent guide. He gave us a comprehensive outline of the historical conditions leading to the Khmer Rouge before taking us to the Killing Fields while encouraging and answering any questions we had. This is an excellent tour that gives a clear overview of a horrible period of history. Be sure to bring American cash with you to S-21, as there are only 11 livings survivors (of the original 12) of the 20,000 imprisoned there, and three were at S-21 selling their books for $10 each. It’s important to learn about this period of history, but especially important to support the survivors as well.

Knowledgeable guide. The history and sites are hard to emotional come to terms with. Very “raw” destinations. Learned a ton and got a glimpse into Cambodian history.

Excellent guide, very knowledgeable about both locations, would recommend as the guide gives a deeper insight into the history than the information provided at the sites themselves.

A must do

While this tour is very sad, I think it is important to do when in Cambodia. Our guide Baboon was brilliant and he explained the history as well as giving some personal accounts. At the end of the S21 prison there are three survivors you can speak to. They are selling books of their experiences for $10 each so make sure to have some cash because you will definitely be so moved you want to buy a book and support them. Baboon also have us his number and has helped us out with local knowledge of buses/PCR tests for going to Vietnam. He really went above and beyond what is expected of a tour guide and we were very grateful.

Very interesting trip filled with information.

We really enjoyed this tour, it was so interesting and we learnt a lot from it. Our guide was Baboon and he knew a lot of information about each place and spoke really good English too, we had plenty of time to look around in our own time and baboon always checked if we had any questions regarding the information he’d said. The transport was perfectly timed between picking us up at each place and our hotel and the aircon was great after walking around the sites in the heat of the day. All round really good trip, thank you.

Tour guide was very knowledgeable and I enjoyed her personal stories also. A couple parts of the tour brought me to tears, but this is something everyone needs to do while in Phnom Penh. Maybe you could do it cheaper on your own, but I thought the guide and driver was well worth the extra cost.

I really enjoyed this tour. It was a somber experience but I’m glad I did it. It’s a very sad part of Cambodian history but it’s important to know what happened to prevent anything like it from happening again. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and don’t think it would have been the same if I had gone by myself. Definitely recommend!

A must have experience in Phnom Penh

I would not say that it was a wonderful experience just because of the tragic topic it was dealing with. However, I consider it was an outstanding moment and I am glad I chose this tour. My guide was perfect: she provided me with excellent explanation on what happened during these hard times and replied to all my questions even the most emotional ones. Thank you for sharing these/your stories with me.

Amazing experience, cannot miss it

The way this piece of history is encapsulated in these sights is unbelievable and immensely impactful to visit. It immediately changed the context of Cambodia and its wonderful people. Chesda was a major part of this and she is a fantastic guide. She is both professional and very funny, quickly feeling like a friend. We appreciated her personal perspective and connection to the Rouge and I can’t imagine having a better guide for this trip. (Maybe that is why we took her up on a separate tour during our stay too!). My wife and I are 32/31 and from the US.
