Explore a former British underground command center on a tour of The Battlebox, a bomb-proof shelter beneath Singapore’s Fort Canning. Learn about Singapore and Britain’s tragic WWII history, hear the inside stories and strategies behind the dramatic British surrender.
Make your way to Fort Canning in Singapore’s Central Area, and present this voucher for admission to The Battlebox, an emergency command center that was heavily used during the Second World War.
Learn the story behind the surrender of Singapore, when Lieutenant-General Arthur Percival handed the British colony to the Japanese, the largest British surrender in history. Visit the museum with a Singapore History Consultant, who explains the underlying causes for the surrender, and the dark period of Singapore history that followed the defeat.
Begin at ground level, then go deeper into the earth as you follow a series of fortified rooms below the surface—the entire complex comprises 26 rooms. See dioramas of wax figures that reimagine the Battlebox during wartime, take in the remains of Japanese Morse code scratched into the walls, and experience a piece of WWII military history first hand.
Participants will learn about the fall of Malaya and Singapore in WWII, and how an underground command centre functioned during the war on the Battlebox tour.
We spent just 2 days in Singapore and the Battlebox Tour was recommended to us. So glad we went! Shaun was a wonderful tour guide. We learnt so much about this significant time in history. The tour underground was in a comfortable temperature. We had enough time to spend in each area, and also were shown videos sitting in a screen room. Shaun's commentary was clear, fascinating and at times moving. Suitable for all adults and school aged children.
I did not know much about the history of this region during WW2 but felt like I left with a great understanding of the war and the causes leading up to the British surrender.
Our guide was fantastic, speaking clearly and with enthusiasm. There are several short videos in different rooms to also give you some visuals from the time.
If you're a history fan, or just want to learn more about the history that helped shape Singapore, this is a great tour!
This short 75 minute tour demonstrated and clarified the events that led up to the fall of Singapore during WW2. The Battlebox tour took us underground into a laberynth of rooms that was the British headquarters/ war command centre. This is a small group tour and our guide Joanna was informative. A great experience.
