This activity will end right where it started.
Your tour begins with pickup from your central Taipei hotel by air-conditioned coach. Soak up the scenery as you drive through New Taipei City, then head into the countryside, winding along mountain roads into the Pingxi district.

Arrive in Pingxi, a historic coal mining town that played an important role in Taiwan’s 20th-century coal boom. Learn about the age-old tradition of releasing a sky lantern. The nostalgic ritual is said to bring good health and good fortune, and your guide explains the origin of the tradition and how it’s become the focal point of the annual Taiwan Lantern Festival.

Continue to Shifen Old Street, a lively street set around the historic Pingxi rail line, which was built in 1918, and now runs as a tourist train, following a scenic route through the Keelung River Valley. Hear how famous Taiwanese movies such as Hou Hsiao-hsien's ‘Dust In The Wind’ were filmed here and pose for photos on the atmospheric street.

There’s just time for one more stop before returning to the city—the magnificent Shifen Waterfall, a natural wonder nicknamed the ‘Little Niagara of Taiwan’.

Back in Taipei, your tour ends with drop-off at your hotel.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Shifen Old Street
The first stop is Shifen Railway Station. The station is located down Keelung River from the waterfall area, right alongside Shifen Old Street, originally built for transporting coal during Japanese colonization. Today it stands as a reminder of Taiwan’s history. Shifen Old Street is lined with souvenir shops, sky lantern shops and eateries. You will also see a lot of people set up their sky lanterns on the railway track, getting ready to release them into the sky. Since you are here, of course, you will not miss out on the opportunity to experience this special tradition. Sky Lantern release in Taiwan originates from Shifen in Pingxi District, New Taipei City. Nowadays, the lanterns are used as the symbols of peace and good fortune. 3 or 4 people will share one lantern, and each of you can write down your wishes on one side of the lantern. Your tour guide will teach you how to release a sky lantern correctly, so you can fully enjoy the tranquil and peaceful moment.

Stop At:
Shifen Waterfall
Your tour continues with a visit to Shifen Waterfall. Shifen Waterfall is one of the most popular attractions in this area, widely-known as the “Little Niagara Falls” of Taiwan, a cascade-type waterfall similar to North America’s Niagara Falls. There are several viewing platforms near Shifen Waterfall, where the visitors can see the waterfall from different angles, even have a close-up look. On sunny days, if you are lucky, you can capture a beautiful rainbow created by the mist of this 20-meter tall waterfall as it splashes into the lake.

A tour you could do on your own by train

This is less than a half day tour and probably better done by train gets very busy with lanterns and nice waterfall but not much else. Poor communication for pick up time prior as it is a mini buss with many stops no pre-email.

Hi Jamie, Sorry for the poor service that you experienced. We will investigate the problems and improve our services in the future. Please accept our sincere apologies.

This tour was very informative. The guide was punctual and explained a lot about Taipei and Taiwan as a country on the drive out. The Sky latern was amazing but would definitely suggest not doing it while it rains. The tour was covered everything that was necessary in the area and was more than adequate. We were back by lunch time which left the rest of the day free for other things. Tour does start very early (pick up was 7.30).

It could have been better if we stayed a little longer in our destinations, the tour was really nice especially the sky lantern experience, but I think they are little rushing. It’s not actually 5 hours tour, more like 3 hours.

We had a great time. The lantern launching and waterfall viewing were particularly enjoyable though we felt bad for the few people whose lanterns ran into buildings or burned up after launch. Also a bit concerned about the impact of all that litter on the environment in particular the metal content of the lanterns. Other than that, no complaints. We only had three on the tour, us and one lady from Japan, so the tour was bilingual English/Japanese. Our host was cheerful and helpful. The old street walk wasn't really what we expected - we walked ourselves and didn't hear about movies or anything...was promised on the Viator page but no big deal as we don't really care about that. We'd recommend this tour.

Had a wonderful day spent flying our own sky lantern with all our wishes, hoping the heavens would grant each one of them. The bustling old street is lined with shoppes selling fried ice cream, herbal tea, beautiful lanterns, souvenirs. The guide was excellent and the ride to and from Shifen was comfortable, passing the scenic mountainous landscape of rural Taiwan. Great tour.

The actual tour duration was a lot shorter than the advertised 5 hours as apparently a cushion is built in to allow for traffic more likely an issue on weekdays. But it was very nice - especially liked the waterfall...

Im glad I took this tour in my last day in Taiwan. Our tour guide is Tony and he is really professional. He explained about the places and took us to many places where we can take many good pictures, while he also helped us take our own pictures.

Good tour. Got picked up from our apartment and then shown to the waterfall. Our guide spoke OK English, not fluent but enough to understand. Then the Sky lantern was fun too in Old Shifen. Would recommend if you have half a day to spare.

This was an amazing experience! As a family we were able to paint our desires on a lantern, and then release it up into the air. We were also able to see the quaint little town and visit the shops there, see the train, and go to the beautiful waterfall. The tour was well organized, our guide was passionate, and spoke good english. Thank you for a great time! A must see in Taiwan!
