Your tour begins at your Dorset hotel, where you’ll board a private vehicle destined for the isle of Portland — connected to the Dorset mainland by the narrow strip of Chesil Beach. The landscapes feature in Hardy’s 19th-century novel, The Well-Beloved.

Travel through Weymouth and see locations connected to the author: Hardy worked as an architect here for a year and the town therefore features in several of his works.

Proceed to Dorchester, the setting of The Mayor of Casterbridge, and visit the statue dedicated to Hardy and the house he designed. Take a turn around the quaint market town with your guide, who points out places of interest.

Your next stop is Hardy’s Cottage, a cob and thatch cottage in which the literary legend was born. Delve into Hardy’s early life in the nearby visitor center and enjoy the picturesque natural scenes that surround.

After paying your respects to Hardy’s final resting place, return to your vehicle and relax during the journey to your Dorset hotel.

Isle of Portland
Join us as we take a tranquil walk exploring the disused coastal railway track on the East Side of Portland. The walk has gained national appeal for its stunning Jurassic Coast views and flat cliff-side trail. Walking with a guide learn about the Jurassic Coast, Portland’s rich history in quarrying and its famous stone used for St Pauls Cathedral & Buckingham Palace! The old line operated from the late nineteenth century until closing to passengers in the 1952 and goods in 1965. Its construction needed twelve years of blasting through solid rock and three extensions of Parliamentary time. Today, parts of the line can still be walked and is considered one of the most scenic lines in the south west of England; it is now part of Dorset’s World Heritage Jurassic Coast. We end with an ice cream and a “cuppa” at the top of Portland looking over the spectacular Chesil Beach and the Olympic Rings.

We had a fantastic day with Dan our guide, who was knowledgeable and friendly. There was never any rush like on other tours, we were encouraged to take as much time as we liked at the various stops. We won't hesitate to take one of these tours again! Highly recommended.
